The Redskins - peel session 9/10/1982

Yet another influential band in my life, the second band i ever saw live. They played a miners strike benefit in our home town of corby, and i managed to persuade my mum that this fresh faced fourteen year old was big enough to go. They were superb, being joined on stage by the brass section of the local support band. But a load of skins smashed up the venue, scared the crap out of me!

When i was growing up chumbawamba were put somewhat on a pedestal by me, and it was sad to see them fall so far off it!

While at sheffield poly i got to know them a little as they used to let us put a fundraiser table for our sab group whenever they played there. Up until the SHHHH lp that was, when we got a call saying they weren`t allowing political groups in apart from the ANL. Unknown to them we set up a table outside the gig, only for bouncers to promptly turn it over and chase us off.

Then they signed to e.m.i and the rest was history!

Half man Half biscuit - peel sessions

Ever since i first heard trumpton riots on john peel right to the present day and seeing them in cambridge a while ago the biscuits have been a constant companion. I`ve been through a pretty rough time this last few months but playing songs like 24 hour garage people or rod hull is alive cheered me up no end. They`ve been educational as well. I mean, i knew who kendo nagasaki was from watching the wrestling on world of sport every saturday, but i`d never have known who len ganley or hedley verity ever were!

It wouldn`t be absurd to say that dick lucas has helped shape the political stance of most of my life. When i said this to him after seeing them once it almost ended in fistycuffs! He made the point that i probably would have made the same life choices and his bands were just the background music to them. This may well be true, but without hearing bands like the redskins, billy bragg or subhumans on peels shows i don`t think i`d be the same person i am today. Of course thatchers tory gov`t closing corby steelworks was a major factor as well!!

SNUFF- UK TOUR FLEXI

Went to see duncan redmonds play an acoustic set at sawyers the other week, it was a top night but i can`t believe there was only five or six of us in the audience! i mean, snuff would have filled swyers three times over! Like i said i had a great night but i think i might have annoyed mr redmond slightly because due to the lack of audience my drunken singing was probably louder than his mic! then again, he couldn`t remember the words to a couple of guns & wankers numbers so i had to shout them! Here`s snuffs tour flexi from 89 i think. First time i ever saw snuff was spporting fugazi in nottingham at the marcus garvey in 89. Ididnt think they`d be good but by the end of the first song i was bouncing round like a loon! next year i had to go to work in belgium the week after reading, just when snuff and joyce mckinney were playing in kettering. To say i was gutted was an understatement! (I never got to see j mckinney exp. live). Seeen snuff way too many times since, i thnk they lost the plot when fat mike got interested in them & tried to turn them into a punk chas & dave, but i still love `em!

Bufallo tom, sound city 94

To say bufallo tom are now one of my favourite bands, back in the day i was a bit "mmmmh" about them, they were just another boston pixies/throwing muses slade produced band to me.
But today i hear the opening of i`m allowed or crawl and i`m instantly thrown back to channel 2 or the back room of the rock in the early 90`s, of coming out of bpm in leicester and my girlfriend handing me the crawl cd single she`d just "acquired". I only remember seeing them once, supporting the wedding present at de montfort. Don`t know why i never went to see them later on touring smitten, guess no one would go with me.
